There are several things that can go wrong with your disposal, many of which can be avoided by simply not putting things down the drain that shouldn’t go there.
A clogged drain line is almost always caused by starchy or fibrous foods being sent down into the disposal. Potato peels, cucumber peels, carrots, corn husks and celery are the major offenders. These items slip by the blades or wrap themselves around them. The unit needs to be turned off and the jam cleared by hand. This can be done by physically removing the drain pipe and clearing it out. Clearing out around the blades should be done with a tool such as a pair of pliers to avoid cutting yourself. If you cannot clear the drain yourself, call a professional to do it for you.
A humming sound means that your flywheel is disconnected from the rotary blades. This happens when the blade get stuck – usually on something like a spoon or fruit stone. The added pressure on the blades causes a safety switch to engage and release the flywheel. Clearing the block and resetting the unit will fix this problem.
Leaky units are usually a sign that the upper or lower seal on your disposal is failing. If the seals are failing, you’re probably going to need a new unit. Rebuilding a seal requires opening up the unit. This takes a considerable amount of time and the labor costs would quickly become more than buying and installing a brand new unit.
Unless your breaker has been tripped, the motor has burned out. You’ll need to replace the unit if this is the case. To test the unit, press the red button at the bottom to reset it.
Whatever the problem with your garbage disposal may be, our team will be able to diagnose and repair it quickly. If you need hassle free garbage disposal repair in Tempe and can’t afford to wait, call the team that has been doing it right for over 70 years.
